Brahma sends Tillottama to deal with Asuras Sundan and Upasundan

The Asura brothers after getting Lord Brahma's blessing that they would be killed by each other only and that no other man or even God would be able to kill them, decided to wage war against the Gods and other princess too. They decided to become the Lord of the world. Lord Indra, who had tried to stop their tapasya was their first choice. And they began preparing for an attack on him. Many of the Gods and saints approached Lord Brahma and complained about the misdeeds of Sundan and Upasundan. Lord Brahma thought for a while and then with his powers created the most beautiful women ever and named her Tillottama. He told Tillottama the whole story about the two Asura brothers. You are to go to them and create discord between them so that they will quarrel and kill each other.

Tillottama promised to carry out the orders of Lord Brahma. Tillottama reached the palace of the two Asura brothers. They were busy playing with hundreds of women in the garden. Tillottama appeared suddenly from behind a tree. She went to the brothers and said she is Tillottama and that she is touring some parts of the world.

You are most welcome and we will give you whatever you want said the brothers together. "Give me sometime. Let me think over the matter," said Tillottama. " What is there to think about?" said Sundan." I am the elder brother and you shall be my wife. "Let her decide for herself. Let her see who will be the better one to marry, you or me," said Upasundan. "Forget about the marriage for the present," said Tillottama. "I am hungry and let me first have something to eat." Immediately food was ordered for Tillottama and hundreds of servants rushed in with various kinds of delicious food. After taking food Tillottama joined other ladies in dancing and singing and playing various kinds of games.

All the while the Asura brothers were trying separately to win Tillottama's attention. Then by chance she met the elder brother Sundan and he said I love you very much and I want to marry you. Tillottama replied, I also like you very much but your younger brother says he loves me better and would like to marry me. Sundan got very angry hearing this and said he will deal with Upasundan in a befitting manner. Upasundan now got a chance of meeting Tillottama and he also put forward his proposal of marriage to her. She said that she too likes him very much but your brother will not like this happening as he is also interested in me. In fact he told me that he would have you out if there is any such problem

. After some more singing and dancing when everybody returned to the palace, Sundan said to his brother that he is going to marry Tillottama, but this made Upasundan furious and he replied that he has already proposed to Tillottama and she too is interested in me. But Sundan said I am elder to you and you are to take orders from me. Upasundan replied, we are brothers and we are equal and I am not going to give up Tillottama even for the sake of my brother.

Sundan warned that I will kill anybody who claims her and so did Upasundan and both were ready for a fight. Tillottama intervened and said since both of you cannot marry me I will go to Indra who once told me that he likes me. But both brothers again requested her to marry them. Then Sundan warned Upasundan to behave or else he would set him right. But Upasundan inturn asked Sundan to shut up and mind his business. Angry words led to a fight between them and the two killed each other. Tillottama had done the work assigned to her by Lord Brahma.
