Pandu's death from the curse of rishi Kindam

Pandu had been living in the forest along with his wives and five children for many years. During the time he was very conscious of the curse of rishi Kindam that he would die the moment he mated with any of his wives. It was the season of spring. The trees in the forest were loaded with flowers. And the air was filled with the fragrance of these flowers. The animals and birds in the forest were happy as nature's bounty seemed to be exceptional at that time. Pandu was roaming through the forest and savouring the beauty of nature along with his second wife Madri. In the beautiful environs Madri looked exceptionally beautiful to Pandu. Momentarily he forgot the curse of rishi Kindam and Pandu embraced his wife. Madri's efforts to dissuade her husband and remind him of the rishi's curse were of no avail. Thus Pandu died in the embrace of his wife Madri. Hearing madri's wails Kunti came running to the spot along with the five children only to find her husband dead. As the eldest, Kunti wanted to commit sati on the pyre of her husband. But Madri begged to be allowed to commit sati as Pandu had died due to his inability to control his feelings for her. Madri then asked Kunti to look after her two children Nakul and Sahdev, like her own and committed sati on the pyre of Pandu.
