Makar Sankranti

Practice

Makar Sankranti marks the commencement of the sun's journey to the Northern Hemisphere and is a day of celebration all over the country. Wherever there is a body of water, people take a dip and worship the sun. The river Hooghly, near Calcutta, is a major centre for this festival, as people come from different parts of the country for a ceremonial cleansing in the river. This is known as the Gangasagar Mela. In Gujarat, brightly coloured kites dot the skies, in celebration of Makara Sankranti.

Time:January 14 (every year)

Place:Practically all over the country.
