Snake worship is common in different parts of the country. The Cobra and its images are worshipped. Lord Vishnu is believed to rest on the body of a thousand-headed snake, Ananta. In Bengal, Manasa is worshipped as the goddess of snakes. Shiva, who wears snakes as ornaments, is also worshipped on account of snakes, apart from for his own snake. Large Kerala households maintained Pambumkavus, special places for snake worship. Milk is a common offering, although modern science holds that snakes do not drink milk or other liquids.
