Vishu

Practice

Vishu marks the beginning of the New Year for Malayalees. The most important thing to do on Vishu day is to see the special 'kani' -- the first thing you see in the morning. The kani for Vishu is a collection of auspicious articles: a lamp, coconut, fruits, grain, coins, gold, a yellow flower called 'konna' and, a mirror.

The inclusion of the mirror is remarkable in that people rarely have the confidence to consider the sight of their own face as something auspicious. Elders give cash presents to dependents and relatives younger to them. This is called Kayneettam (extending the hand). Every household greets the dawn with fireworks.

Time:April/May

Place:Kerala
