Sridevi
is the greatest actress India has ever produced. She is the
only true "living legend." No other actress has explored her
acting capabilities as much as Sridevi has. Proof is her successful
movies and awards. Though Sridevi may have lost her title
as the number one Indian actress, she still remains one actress
to be reckoned with. Like Yash Chopra (a very famous and successful
director) says, Sridevi can only move up. She has gone
beyond the number game. She has acheived what only a few can.
I shall always be your biggest fan. . . Like major comets,
superstars don't come our way very often.
Sridevi is a genuine item who ruled over the last decade.
Nimble comedy, luminous sensuality, evocative emotionalism...
this marvelous maverick gave memory-clutching performances
in a variety of roles. Even when the rest of the film was
dead, Sridevi was a killer. So when the film was good, Sri
made it fairly resonate with her talent. She is a combination
of talent, professionalism, and a versatility that astounds
her colleagues. "Sheer Electricity" was how people described
the young lady's charisma when she first appeared on the big
screen.
With the impish charm of a Mumtaz, the stunning footwork of
a Vyjantimala, and the spontaneous exuberance of a Geeta Bali--
SRIDEVI HAD ARRIVED! Sridevi's private side is quite opposite
of her screen roles. Quiet, unaffected, shy, almost reclusive,
she prefers quiet days with her family whom she adores and
who are pillars of strength for her. She rarely socializes
beyond what is professionally required of her. It is this
mystique, her quiet reclusive nature, which makes her a fascinating
Amalgam. With the applause from co-stars and the love of her
fans, Sridevi has certainly carved a niche for herself in
the Indian film industry as the MOST versatile entertainment
queen! Sridevi has always been more at home with lighthearted
movies such as the Charlie Chaplin riff in Mr. India, the
child-woman in Sadma, the beer guzzler in Chaalbaaz and so
on with morbid meditations on human frailty. Yet, she has
also expertly juggled comedy and drama to become the most
popular actress. Her onscreen verve elevates even banal scripts
as she extracts juice from pulp, like Himmatwala, Tohfa,
Nagina, and Laadla.
Counting all of Sridevi's movies, she has starred in more
than 230. Sridevi was the first actress to demand 1 crore
per movie. If one is to consider superstardom in its true
sense Sridevi is no less than Amitabh Bachchan.
1983: Time abetted Sridevi in her meteoric ascent. Her advent
coincided with the end of the Hema Malini-Rekha era. The Rati-Padmini
brigade simply did not have the impressive star value, and
the 5'7" tall Sridevi soon dwarfed the competition.
Sridevi's
obsession
 |
I
feel empty... as if something valuable had been taken
away from me... if I'm not surrounded by greenery... and
at least some flowers. In Madras, my house does have a
garden, but in Bombay I have to make do with potted plants
and some fresh roses from the florist. White flowers are
my favorite, especially "mogras" because of their heady
fragrance. I don't wear "mogras" in my hair too often
but they're a must at the "poojas" at home. My obsession
happens to be white flowers. I don't know why but whenever
I get bouquets, they're of flowers of many, many different
colors. The first bouquet I ever received in my life was
when one of my early Telugu films turned out to be a hit.
I was also thrilled when Amitabh Bachchanji sent me a
truck full of flowers after seeing the rushes of my "Dushman"
dance number from Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja. |
